5 Warning Signs Your Boat Needs a Diagnostic Check

Most engine problems don't start as emergencies. They start as small, easy-to-ignore signals — and by the time they turn into a breakdown on the water, the fix is usually a lot more expensive than it would have been at the dock.

Here are five signs worth a diagnostic visit before your next trip out:

Engine misfires or rough idle. If your motor hesitates, stumbles, or just doesn't feel as smooth as it used to, that's often an early warning sign rather than a one-time fluke.

Unusual noises. Knocking, grinding, or a whine that wasn't there last season is your engine telling you something changed.

Warning lights or gauge readings that don't add up. Modern outboards and sterndrives throw codes for a reason — don't wait for the light to turn into a stall.

Electrical gremlins. Flickering gauges, a livewell pump that cuts out, or accessories that behave inconsistently often point to a deeper wiring or charging issue.

A noticeable drop in performance. If you're not getting the speed, acceleration, or fuel economy you used to, it's worth having someone take a real look rather than just topping off and hoping.

The earlier we catch it, the simpler — and cheaper — the fix usually is. If anything on this list sounds familiar, request a diagnostic appointment and we'll find the root cause before it strands you out on the lake.
